Casa Roja
Regional Mexican cocina. Masa ground daily in Austin.
About Us
Casa Roja centers on the rhythmic sound of the stone mill. Every morning, heirloom corn sourced from small farms in Oaxaca undergoes traditional nixtamalization to produce masa with a deep, nutty profile. The kitchen focuses on regional specialties from Puebla and Jalisco, using dried chilies toasted over open flame and fresh herbs gathered from the local garden. Founders Sofia and Mateo opened the doors in Austin to bring a specific kind of warmth to the city. The space is bright, filled with afternoon sunlight and the scent of charred husks. Tables are crowded, conversation is loud, and the salsa bar is always stocked with house-made blends of roasted tomatillo and habanero. The menu avoids shortcuts. Tortillas are pressed by hand and cooked on a hot comal until they puff. Each dish relies on the balance of sharp acidity from fresh lime and the richness of meats simmered for twelve hours in clay pots. From the smoke of the grill to the cold condensation on a glass of horchata, the focus is on the raw materials. It is a place where the food is honest and the atmosphere is easy, designed for long lunches and late nights with friends.
